Questions

Questions owners ask.

Straight answers about Clara, your people’s privacy, and what happens after your Roadmap.

Is the interviewer really an AI?

Yes. Clara is an AI interviewer, and she tells you so at the start of every call. Because she’s an AI, the calls fit your schedule: early morning, evening or weekend.

She doesn’t get tired, she doesn’t have bad days, and she isn’t there to judge you. She’s there to listen, so you can tell her how things really work, including the messy parts.

An expert still checks your Roadmap before it reaches you.

What does Clara ask?

She asks how your business actually runs: how you price a job, how the work gets done, how you get paid, what goes wrong and what you do about it, and who could step in if you weren’t there.

The first call covers the whole business, so some questions may feel basic. Between calls we go through everything you said, and the second call comes back to what matters most, with questions built from your own answers.

Clara doesn’t give advice on the call. Her job is to understand, and the advice comes in your Roadmap. There are no wrong answers. If you don’t know something, say so and she’ll move on.

Is this right for my business?

It’s built for businesses that run on human judgment: the owner’s, or that of one or two key people who just know how things are done. They know how to price a job, which customers need extra care and what to do when something goes wrong, and most of it was never written down.

If you want to strengthen your business so it doesn’t depend so heavily on you or your key people, this is for you.

How do I get started, and how much of my time does it take?

Email us at hello@theunderstandingco.com to start. We’ll send your agreement and invoice. Once both are done, you pick a time for your first call, and Clara calls you at that time. From there:

  • Two calls with Clara of about 45 minutes each. Most owners take them on a walk with headphones in.
  • A few minutes to choose two key people for Clara to talk with, and to give them a heads-up.
  • With your permission, records you already keep, like price lists or job files. Send what’s easy; there’s no need to create anything.

You don’t need to prepare anything. Your Roadmap arrives within a week of your last call, and then you have a 30-minute call with an expert to go through it.

Are the calls recorded, and who sees what?

Yes. Every call is recorded and transcribed so nothing gets lost, and you’re asked for your consent first. You own your recordings and transcripts. Ask and we’ll send you copies, or delete them.

Your people’s calls work differently. You never see or hear their transcripts or recordings, not a page and not a clip. What you get is the combined findings in your Roadmap. Your people own their own recordings the same way you own yours, and they can have anything they said struck, during the call or afterwards. Anything genuinely sensitive is kept out of your Roadmap and never reaches you in any form.

Here’s why that matters. Your people will only tell Clara how things really work if they feel safe doing it. Many worry that being honest could put their job at risk, or that the AI is there to replace them. It isn’t. The point is to take repetitive work off their plates, and we tell them so plainly.

We’ll be honest about one thing. With one or two people, you may be able to guess where a finding came from, and we don’t pretend otherwise. That’s why, before Clara contacts anyone on your team, you commit in writing that nothing they say will be held against them. If that doesn’t sit right with you, we skip the team interviews.

We keep your recordings, transcripts and records in a file that is yours alone. We don’t share them with anyone else, apart from the services that run our calls and analysis for us. What we learn across many businesses, with every name and number taken out, helps us ask better questions and build better tools for every client. Ask any time and we’ll return your file or delete it.

How many calls are included?

Two calls with Clara for you, and one call each with two of your key people. Each additional key person is $500.

Your Business Roadmap and a 30-minute call with an expert to go through it are included in the $2,500. The Roadmap is yours to keep.

What happens after the Roadmap?

It’s yours. The Roadmap tells you which improvement to start with and why, and every step in it is written so your own people can do it.

Then you have a 30-minute call with an expert to go through it. We’ll talk through your options: what your people can do themselves, and what kinds of tools could help. If you’d like our help with any of it, we put together an Action Plan, and you see the price before any work starts. There’s no obligation, and nobody will chase you.

Are you going to sell me software?

No. We don’t sell software, and we take no referral fees from anyone who does. The only money we make is what you pay us, so our only interest is finding what’s right for you. Most improvements don’t need new software at all: they need what’s in your head written down so other people can use it.

When a tool or service would help, your Roadmap says so. It sets out what you actually need and the kinds of options that fit how you work and what you can spend, with the case for and against each. You choose, and you deal with any provider directly.

Do you give financial, tax or legal advice?

No. We don’t give financial, investment, tax or legal advice: not on the calls and not in your Roadmap. We also don’t value your business or predict what it would sell for.

If something we find needs that kind of advice, we’ll say so, and you can take it to your own accountant, lawyer or advisor.

Can I talk to a person first?

Yes. If you still have questions after reading this, email us at hello@theunderstandingco.com and a person will set up a time to talk. There’s no pitch and no obligation.
